Orientation - What To Expect

By Gap 360

When you first arrive in the United States you’ll enjoy a 3-day orientation in New York City. This is a great opportunity to ease into life in America and to learn some important tips, rules and information about living abroad. Here’s exactly what you can expect during your New York orientation:

Tuesday

Your orientation will begin on a Tuesday when you arrive in New York. After landing at the airport and picking up your luggage, you’ll hop on a shuttle bus that’ll take you to your hotel in the city. Here, the local team will settle you in and give you your orientation handbook. You’ll also meet some of your fellow au pairs, who’ll be arriving throughout the day!

Tonight, you can join an optional tour of the city (extra cost: approx USD30). This tour will be a great opportunity to get to know your fellow au pairs and also see some of the best sights this sparkling city has to offer. You’re American adventure has begun!

Wednesday

Your orientation properly begins today, as you learn all about the nitty gritty of working in the USA. This morning’s session will cover everything from legal documents to taxes to insurance, and also give you some advice about driving in the USA (quick hint – they drive on the other side of the road!).

This afternoon, you’ll learn about important aspects of childhood development, including nutrition and social skills. You’ll be an au pair pro by nightfall!

Breakfast and lunch will be provided at an American diner today.

Thursday

This morning you’ll gather for a final session about child safety and first aid. You’ll learn key skills such as CPR, the correct response to allergic reactions and other household safety tips.

This afternoon, you’ll be given your onward travel ticket, which will have been pre-paid by your host family. You’ll be travelling to them tomorrow!

Spend the rest of the day enjoying the sights and sounds of the Big Apple. Check out our blog on the must-see sights in this incredible city!

Friday

Time to begin your au pair adventure! Say goodbye to your fellow au pairs and begin your journey. Travel instructions will have been provided by your family, so no need to worry about getting lost. Your host family will meet you on arrival.
